de Quervain's Tendonitis
What is it?
de Quervain's Tendonitis is a hand condition of irritated or inflamed wrist tendons at the base of the thumb making thumb and wrist movement uncomfortable or painful.
Typical Symptoms
Pain and/or numbness at the thumb side of the wrist, including pain that travels up the thumb or down the forearm. Gripping objects, twisting or motion may trigger discomfort. Often seen in new mothers who report pain when lifting their newborn babies.
Treatment
The changing of hand usage or wearing a splint may sometimes help. Oral anti-inflammatory medication or a cortisone injection may also be recommended. In more severe cases, surgery may be recommended to create more room for the inflamed tendons.
Surgical Recovery
Routine activities: once pain or tenderness subsides, typically one to three weeks.
