Trigger Finger
Stenosing Tenosynovititis
What is it?
Trigger Finger is a condition of tendons in the hand that cannot move freely causing a finger or thumb to momentarily "catch" as it is being straightened. This may cause pain or popping due to increased resistance of the tendon to glide smoothly. In more severe cases, the finger or thumb may become locked, without ability to move or bend it.
Typical Symptoms
Pain in the palm or base of the finger or thumb. Sensitive to pressure. In some cases, a nodule may be felt which is swelling of the tendon lining. Patients may indicate temporary sticking or locking.
Treatment
The changing of hand usage or wearing a splint may occasionally help. Additionally, oral anti-inflammatory medication and steroid injections may relieve trigger finger. When the condition is more severe, surgery may be needed to create more space for the tendon.
Surgical Recovery
Routine activities: a few days after surgery. Increased mobility is generally immediately evident after surgery.
