Fractures

What is it?
A fracture is a broken bone. A fracture may be simple, with bones still aligned, or it may be complex where bone pieces are displaced. A compound fracture is when bone pierces through the skin.

Typical Symptoms:

Fractures tend to be painful with loss of movement. Some fractures are obvious, with a deformity apparent immediately.

Treatment:

X-rays typically assist physicians in diagnosing a fracture. A splint or cast may be applied. Pins or wires may be necessary to keep displaced bone pieces aligned. Some fractures require surgery to reset the bone. Bone may be held in place with pins, screws or plates.

If a fracture is severe, such as shattered bone, a bone graft may be necessary.

Surgical Recovery

Routine activities: Weeks to a couple of months, depending on the type, location and severity of the fracture. Physical therapy is almost always needed to restore range of motion and strength.
